Chandigarh, the present capital city of the States of both Punjab and Haryana is the first planned city of India by European modernist architect Le Corbusier. However, it does not belong to either of the States. It is a Union Territory, administered by the Government of India.
The name of the city is derived from the Goddess of power known as Shri Chandika whose temple is on Chandigarh-Kalka Road. The temple is known by the name of Chandi Mandir. and a fort or "garh" beyond the temple, called Chandigarh.
The temple is believed to be an ancient site and has a major religious significance for Hindus. Being located at the foothills of the Shivaliks it also provides and innumerable tourist spots within the city and around. |
